Interesting post, I to had a father who was drunk, bashed and abused, and like you felt as your post, but there was a period before he passed where he stopped drinking and beneath all of the drink and abuse was a great man. I was able to unravel some of the reasons why a bright young man turned to drink and desperation in actions.

We all start out as innocent children ( every one of us ) and in reflection it is sad that some people find pressures to hard or the lack of support and love when they need it most, that they turn this way.

I was glad i was able to see my dad in a new light and have the opportunity to tell him I loved him and that he knew that i understood he went through challenges that beat him.

I also really hope you get to see your dad as a person who was once an innocent child and that some where in his life there were some changes that made him turn the way he is now and that you can also see the good within your dad and tell him you love him while you have that opprtunity, for you to develop as a whole in your current life and for your family you must be able to forgive your dad.

I'm pretty much with you on this post. Our dads are different but they have the whole not a great dad thing in common. i'm pretty much over it. went to see my grandpa in rhine yesterday though. he's good so it sucks i can't see him more.__stuff like monica'smom said about talking to your dad and all...people with good dads just don't get it. and that's good for them. but why go out of your way to contact someone that's basically just toxic? no point.
